1051 Although at times, Samuel is represented as dying in 1953, his wife, Laura's death certificate in 1949 gives her as a widow in 1949. Graham, Samuel P. (I14981)

1052 Although Bessie's death certificate says her father is Thos. A. Pruett, her marriage to Charles U. Penwell at age 16 shows her as a Turley. Since her gravestone gives her birthdate as 29 Mar 1897 and her mother's marriage to Thomas Pruett as 16 Sep 1899, she had little time to know her father. Note that her mother might have left Dempsey or Dempsey Turley might have died earlier than 1899. It makes sense that Bessie would use the name of the father she grew up with and perhaps was adopted by, Thomas Pruett. Turley, Bessie A. (I19098)

1053 Although Christopher is shown in some online records, it is not clear that he was actually a child of Rev. John Higgins and Elizabeth Clynton. HIGGINS, Christopher (I5216)

1054 Although Engelberge or Alsace was listed as a wife of Lothair II, it appears she was a mistress. Her children, given as "illegitimate", were Hugh c.855-895 Duke of Alsace, Gisela 865-908 (m. Godfrey, Duke of Frisia), Bertha c.863-925 (m. 1.Theobald of Arles bro of Theutberga, 2.Adalbert II of Tuscany), and Ermengard.

Wife of Lothair II was Teutberga, and a known mistress by whom he had a son, Hugo, was Waldrada/Valtrade, who became a later wife after his divorce from Teutberga/Theutberga.

Daughter, Ermengarde was listed as daughter of Engelberge of Alsace. Is Engelberge also Waltrada? Need historical confirmation of lineage. No record found of a spouse named Engelberge, or a second daughter named Ermengarde (there is also a daughter Ermengarde of Lorraine, daughter of Lothair II and Waltrada).

OF ITALY, Ermengarde (I6339)

1055 Although Engelberge or Alsace was listed as a wife of Lothair II, it appears she was a mistress.

OF ALSACE, Engelberge (I6903)

1056 Although Harvy is on his birth record, and Harvey elsewhere, he also used Harry, as evidenced on his marriage record. Setliff, Harvey Gilbert (I11366)

1057 Although her interment record does not give her first name, documents regarding the purchase and transfer of property from the Corporation of City of New Orleans in 1818 at 1000-1002 Bienville at the corner of Bienville and Burgundy streets gives the three sisters involved as Rose Elenore Grenot, Sophie Grenot and Annette Grenot. The property was then sold/transferred to Rose's son, Joseph Francois Lapice. Grenot, Annette (I19331)

1058 Although information extant on Simon, son of Simon Couch born 1633, suggests this son Simon was born in 1669, the 1687 will of Simon (born 1633) gives Simon as the second son. Therefore, he is placed here in that birth order without a birthdate given. Couch, Simon II (I2681)

1059 Although Jean Stewart was clearly the mother of Lt. Allan MacNab, it is unclear whether she was his natural mother, or his step-mother. MacNab, Lt. Allan (I9273)

1060 Although likely this Simon is related to the Simon Couch b.1633 lineage, that would need to be documented to show a relationship. Couch, Simon (I19006)

1061 Although Mary Frances Horton Adkins death certificate gives 1883 as her birth year, the family records of Celia Setliff, spouse of great grandson to Octavia Egnor, and per 1900 census, Mary was born December 1882. Horton, Mary Frances (I23)

1062 Although Mary's death certificate says she was born in NJ (according to the recollection of Cornelia Grenot), other records of her life indicate she was born in LA. The death certificate indicates she was born in 1857, contrary to the 1900 Census which gives Apr 1860. Since her father died in 1859, the 1857 estimate is more likely. Additionally, her father Jacob Vannier (descendant of the German-spelled Wannier family), also shown in her death certificate as born in NJ, was born in Steinweiler in Germany. Both his father and grandfather were mayors of Steinweiler. (Steinweiler information source: S18) Vannier, Mary (I6294)

1063 Although Millard's death certificate gives his birth year as 1857, his son, Oliver Balaam's family Bible gives it as 1859. Atkins, William C. Millard (I22)

1064 Although Myrtle's marriage record gives her birthplace as Lincoln County, her birth record shows it as Kanawha County. Hudson, Myrtle M. (I17574)

1065 Although not typical, some marriages in the record show a bond date that is later than the marriage date. Littleberry Atkins' & Nancy Atkins' marriage bond surety is dated 29 May 1790. The marriage date is clearly 3 May but the year is illegible due to poor image quality and could be later than 1790. (Others have represented this marriage as on 29 May 1790, but the marriage date column in these records was added by hand later as the far right column on each page.) Family F1078

1066 Although Parker's military pension records gives the marriage date as 5 Mar 1851, according to their marriage record, the marriage of Parker Adkins & Mrs. Mary Ann ___ Willis took place on 11 Mar 1851 (license on 9 Jan 1851).

1067 Although presented here that Nancy Jacobs was the daughter of Thomas Jacobs and known wife, Rebecca Mallett, the text on page 48 of "A Historical Sketch of New Hope Church, in Orange County, N.C." (rev. ed.), by Rev. D. Irvin Craig, 1891 simply states she was the daughter of Thomas Jacobs (and therefore could be a daughter of a previous marriage of Thomas). Jacobs, Nancy (I17311)

1068 Although some have given Peter James Teel as Susan's first husband, I've found no evidence of this marriage. However, Virginia Select Marriages do show her marriage to William Teel. Also, the marriage record of their son, Samuel Teel, gives William Teel as his father and Susan (some spelling of) Copen (his stepfather's surname) as his mother. Family F275

1069 although some references suggest that Mary died within a day of birth, the references used here show her married with children - I have no documentation on her.

one reference gives her as married 4-15-1665 to Richard Lord, Jr., son of Capt. Richard Lord and Sarah ___, and as dying on May 17, 1702, age 59, with one child, Richard Lord 2-1-1669 - 1-29-1712.

1070 Although the 1900 census shows James as born in Apr 1858, the earliest census which shows him and is more likely to be correct (1860) shows him as 5 years old, estimated birth in 1855. Other censuses show him with birth years up to 1859. Saddler, James E. (I2034)

NOTE: If we are indeed not confusing two Edward WINSLOW's here, these notes change his mother from Elizabeth FOLIOTT to Katherine ???, and give him a third wife, Susanna ???-WHITE.

Yes, there is a 2nd Edward Winslow of the Mayflower. This Edward died in England in 1620, and is father to the other Edward.

Brief note 2008: It appears that Gov. Edward Winslow, son of Edward Winslow of the Mayflower have been confused. There is much controversy on the lineage of these Winslows and their spouses, etc. Many citations appear to be assumptions, and documents connected to people without evidence they are indeed records for those specific people...a practice common but not helpful in genealogy.

1131 ASSUMED CORRELATION OF RELATIONSHIPS (by Douglas Couch in 1997):
Will of Isabelle Johns gives children with Cowan surname and granddaughters Isabel & Eleanor Lamb. Isabel (given as Isabella) and Eleanor are daughters of Isaac Cowan Lamb & Mary Hendry. Thus, the relationships shown are assumed that Johns s her maiden name and her Cowan children derived from a previous marriage. It was given that Thomas Lamb and a Miss Cowan were the parents of Isaac Cowan Lamb. Since his children are given in Isabelle Johns will of 1793 as her grandchildren, it seems there is no other way the relationship could have existed.

1135 Aubrey de Vere, born before 1120, third Baron by tenure, of Kensington, Count of Ghisnes, for his fidelity to the Empress Maud, was confirmed by that princess in the office of Great Lord Chamberlain, and all his father's territorial possessions. He had likewise other important grants with the Earldom of Cambridge, provided that dignity was not vested in the King of Scots, but if it were, then he was to have his choice of the Earldoms of Oxford, Berkshire, or Dorsetshire, all which grants being ratified by King Henry II., he was created Earl of Oxford, with the usual grant to earls, of the third penny of the pleas of the county. In the 12th year of King Henry II., on the levy of the aid for portioning the king's daughter, the Earl of Oxford certified his knight's fees to be in number twenty-eight, for which he paid 20 pounds, and in the 2nd year of King Richard I., he paid a fine of 500 marks to the king, "for the sister of Walter de Bolebec, to make a wife for his son." In four years afterwards he contributed 30 pounds, 2 shillings, and 6 pence for the knight's fees he then held, towards the sum at that time raised for the ransom of the king. The earl married (1) Euphamia Cantilupe, daughter of William de Cantilupe, by whom he had no issue, and (2) Lucia Abrincis, daughter and heiress of William de Abrincis. DE, Alberic (I6781)

Surnames: LITHERLAND STROHMEIER KERN HEIN
Submitter: Esthermae Litherland Rooke (drooke@ktc.com)
Date: 18 Aug 1999

We are trying to find the church Sarah Fredia Strohmeier and Nye Litherland were married. We have the minister, Leo or Lou J. Ehrhardt. The date in the Register of Marriages is September 21, 1894. Any information is appreciated! Sarah's father, George Strohmeier, died when she was about 5 years old. Her Mother, Anna Marie (Mary A.) Kern Strohmeier remarried Paul J. Hein of Mt. Carmel. Nye Litherland's parents were William Hamilton Litherland and Susan Hall Litherland of Friendsville Prec., Wabash County, Il.

My note: There is another Sarah Fredia Strohmeier w/no stats, married to Robert N. Litherland. Robert was born abt. 1854. Certainly a different generation, but not too distant to possibly be the same Sarah. No way to tell w/o more data. Or...perhaps a cousin since so many families reused the same names over and over, with siblings having many children with the exact same names as their brothers and sisters, and as their neices and nephews.

1157 Became king of Italy in 839, taking up his residence in that country was crowned king at Rome by Pope Sergins II on June 15, 844. He married his cousin Engelberga, a daughterof King Louis the German, and undertook the independent governmnet of Italy. He took the field against the Saracens; quashed some accusations against Pope Leo; and on the death of his father in September 855 becamse sole emperor. In 857 he allied himself with Louis the German against his own brother Lothair, King of Lotharingia, and King Charles the Bald. But after Louis had secured the election of Pope Nicholas I in 858, he became reconciled with his brother, and received some lands south of the Jura mountains in return for assistance given to Lothair in his efforts to obtain a divorce from his wife, Teutberga. In 863, on the death of his brother Charles, Louis received the kingdom of Provence, and in 864 came into collision with Pope Nicholas I over his brother's divorce. The archbishops, who had been deposed by Nicholas for proclaiming this marriage invalid, obtained the suport of the emperor, who reached Rome with an army in February 864; but, having been seized with fever, he made peace with the pope and left the city. In his efforts to restore order in Italy, Louis met with considerable success both against the turbulent princes of the peninsula and against the Saracens who were ravaging southern Italy. In 866 he routed these invaders, but could not follow up his successes owing to the lack of a fleet. So in 869, he made an alliance with the eaastern emperor, Basil I, who sent him some ships to assist in the capture of Ban, the headquarters of the Saracens, which succombed in 871. Meanwhile, his brother Lothair had died in 869, and owing to his detention in southern Italy, Louis failed to prevent the partition of Lotharingia between Louis the German and Charles the Bald. Some jealousy between Louis and Basil followed the victory at Ban, and in reply to an insult from the eastern emperor Louis attempted to justify his right to the title "Emperor of the Roman". He had withdrawn into Benevento to prepare for a further campaign when he was treacherously attacked in his palace, robbed and imprisoned by Adeichis, prince of Benevento, in August 871. the landing of fresh bands of Saracens compelled Adeichis to release his prisoner a month later, and Louis was forced to swear he would take no revenge for this injury, nor ever enter Benevento with an army. Returning to Rome, he was released from his oath, and was crowned a second time as emperor by Pope Adrian II on May 18, 872. then Louis won further successes against the Saracens, who were driven from Capua, but the attempts of the emperor to punish Adeichis were not very successful. Returning to northern Italy, he died somewhere in the province of Brescia on August 12, 875, and was buried in the church of St. Ambrose at Milan, having named as his successor in Italy his cousin Carloman, son of Louis the German. KING OF FRANKS, Louis "the German" (I6852)

1158 Because the Richard's father was not married to his mother Herleva, Richard became known as Richard FitzGilbert. The term 'Fitz' was used to show that a child was illegitimate son of the father. He was the founder of the House of Clare in England, first Lord of Clare.

Richard Fitzgilbert of Tonebruge, a lawyer and Chief Justice of England, born before 1035, was the founder of the House of Clare in England, first Lord of Clare. He was the eldest son of Gislebert, Count of Eu and Brionne, a descendant of Emperor Charlemagne. He accompanied Duke William into England, and later held one hundred and seventy-six lordships or manors. At the time of the General Survey, which was towards the close of King William's reign, he is called Ricardus de Tonebruge, from his seat at Tonebruge (now Tunbridge), in Kent, which town and castle he obtained from the archbishop of Canterbury, in lieu of the castle of Brion; at which time he enjoyed thirty-eight lordships in Surrey, thirty-five in Essex, three in Cambridgeshire, with some others in Wilts and Devon, and ninety-five in Suffolk, among those was Clare, whence he was styled Richard de Clare; and that place in a few years afterwards becoming the chief seat of the family, his descendants are said to have assumed thereupon the title of Earls of Clare (Burke, pg. 118-119). He married Rohese Giffard of Bolebec, daughter of Walter (Gautier) Giffard de Bolebec, Earl of Buckingham and Earl of Longueville, in Normandy, granddaughter of Osborne de Bolebec, a noble Norman, living in the time of Richard, Duke of Normandy, and granddaughter of his wife, Aveline, sister of Gunnora, Duchess of Normandy. According to Burke, pp. 230-231, he was granted for his gallant services at the battle of Hastings, the title of Earl of Buckingham. At the time of the General Survey, he was sent with Remigius, Bishop of Lincoln, and others, into Worcestershire, and some other counties, to value the lands belonging to the crown, as well as to private individuals in these parts. He himself possessed at that time two lordships in Berkshire; one in Wilts; one in Somersetshire; one in Huntingdon; five in Cambridgeshire; nine in Oxfordshire; nine in the co. of Bedford; three in Suffolk; twenty-eight in Norfolk; an forty-eight in Buckinghamshire; in all one hundred and seven. In 1089, he adhering to William Rufus, fortified his mansions in Normandy, for that king, and became chief general of his army there; yet in some years afterwards (1102), he sided with Robert Curthose (Courthouse), against King Henry I. The earl married Agnes Flaitell, daughter of Gerard Flaitell, and sister of William Flaitell, Bishop of Eureux. They had three children: Walter, his successor, 2nd Earl of Buckingham, who d.s.p; Rohais (Rohese), named above; and Isabel Giffard, who married Richard Granville or Grenville, progenitor of the house of Grenville, Dukes of Buckingham. According to Crispin and Macary, "Falaise Roll" pg. 22, Rohese was the daughter of Walter (Gautier) Giffard, brother of Berenger and Osberne (Osborne), who contributed 30 vessels and 100 men to the fleet for the Conquest as well as the horse on which William the Conqueror rode at the Battle of Hastings. He was awarded the earldom of Buckingham for his services. "Rohesia married Richard de Bienfaite, eldest son of Gilbert, Count of Brionne, from which union sprung the great house of Clare.")

"Matthew J. King, farmer and merchant, Barkada, Ark. Mr. King, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Drew County, settled here in 1842, and there are but two citizens of his age, and but six citizens now living, who were living in this county at that time. Mr. King was born on August 5, 1820, and is the son of William and Cathering (McCauley) King, the father a native of North Carolina. The latter moved to Henderson County, Ky., with his family in 1831, cuultivated the soil, and there died in 1835. The mother then removed with her children, six in number, to Haywood County, Tenn., and there resided with her brother, James McCauley. Later she moved with him to Fayette County, and there died a few years afterward. Her children were named as follows Matthew J. (whose birth occurred in Orange County, N. C.), Nancy (widow of William Rowlit), William (deceased), Ellen, Catherine (deceased), and one child who died in infancy. The maternal grandfather of these children was a soldier in the Revolution, and was over eighty years of age at the time of his death. Matthew J. King worked on a farm to help his mother and there continued until her death, when he was bound out to L. C. Butts to learn the brick mason's trade. He remained with him for three years and then, in 1842, came to Arkansas, located in what is now Drew County (but then a part of Bradley County), and there followed agricultural pursuits for eight years. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Newton, a native of Alabama, and the daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Newton. Mrs. King died in 1880 leaving twelve children, sixe now living: Henry Neeley (married and resides in this county), Jesse Columbus (deceased), Albert (deceased), Mary E. (deceased), Laura A. (deceased), Ophelia (deceased), and William, Joseph J., James F., Sanford N. and Ida (all at home). After his marriage, Mr. King entered a quarter section of Government land, and has since been engaged in tilling the soil. He bought his present homestead, consisting of over 1,200 acres of land, with about 130 acres under cultifation, in 1868, and is also administrator of the estate of Jesse Newton (deceased). He owns a cotton gin (horse power) with a capacity of about three bales per day, and although his principal crop is cotton, he is interested in other occupations, and he and Mr. Oslin are in partnership in trading in mules, cattle, hogs and sheep. Mr. King also owns a half interest in the store at Barkada, owned by King & Oslin. Although in debt $75, he has made all his property by hard work and good business ability, and at the present time his taxable property amounts to over $13,000. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in his political views is Democratic. He has been a member of the Masonic order, but has not affiliated with any lodge for several years. In 1864 and 1865 he was in Capt. Owens' company, was employed as teamster, and was never in any engagements."
