Some children of AJA used ADKINS, while some used ATKINS. All children were born of the same parents.
Son, Virgil, said Andrew's brothers were Emery and Bellam.
Birth:
(Family recollection was that Andrew was born in Cabell County; however, his death record shows Putnam County and is undoubtedly from the memory of the informant, his son, Ray.)
VIEW BIOGRAPHY
Name:
Andrew's draft registration, dated September 12, 1918 and signed by him, shows him with a birth date of August 10, 1883. This document is personally signed by Grampa Andrew, spelling his last name ATKINS.
The Family Bible of his brother, Oliver Balaam ATKINS, gives his birth date as 8 Aug 1883.
Census records do not agree on his age (which is not unusual for census records).
Family recollection of his children while living agreed he was born on August 10, 1884.
Further notes on spelling the family name: Further notes on spelling the family name:
Grampa Andrew's children spelled it both Atkins and Adkins, with some children spelling it one way part of their life, and the other way another part of their life.
An example is one son's entire family spells it Atkins, and yet when he gave the information for Grampa Andrew's death certificate, he gave it as Adkins.
Grampa Andrew himself, spelled it Atkins like his father, William C. Millard "Bud" Atkins, had spelled it.
Beyond Andrew's father, Millard Atkins (sometimes called "Bud"), Andrew was preceded by
1. His grandfather was Jesse ADKINS
2. His great grandfather was Allen ADKINS
3. His great great grandfather was Thomas (Thomas Tindel "Tinsley") ADKINS
In addition to this,
1. His grandmother, Jesse's wife, Letha, had a maiden name of ADKINS
2. His great grandmother, Allen's wife, Mahala, had a maiden name of ADKINS
3. His great great grandmother, Thomas's wife, Susannah, had a maiden name of ADKINS
Although there are other explanations, the family name Adkins derives from a naming custom where families would indicate the earliest male ancestor by using the first two letters of the ancestor's given name, and add "kin" to it, indicating they were his kin, generations later. Using this convention, Adkins (plural) are the kin of Adam.

Wm. C. Millard's son's birth certificate lists him (Millard Sr.) as born in Elk River, WV; which is in Kanawha County and eastward, no part of which is in Cabell County. However, basically all of WV was originally Kanawha County. But if he was born in 1857, WV did not exist as a state until 1863.

One World Tree shows a Mary Horton (b 1900 d 1928) married to Andrew Adkins. Her father is shown as William Horton and mother as Octavia Egnor b abt 1866, d 1888.
=====
One LDS record shows a specific marriage date of October 12, 1882, Kanawha Co, WV, and shows William's middle initial as H. It also shows Octavia as Octaby.
====================
One record shows Lydia Woodrum as another wife of John Washington Egnor. Also she is shown as another wife of William Horton, husband of John Washington Egnor's daughter, Octavia Egnor; however, another John Washington Egnor is his son, Octavia's brother...a more probably match.
Carol Setliff's records show a Benjamin H. Plumley as born to Octavia and Plumley, but the H. seems to indicate he was son of Octavia and Horton, as there are three children listed with H. as middle name. Benjamin was listed as born May 1889; which conflicts with Willey H.'s birth year; however, Willey is also listed as born 1888. My personal records show a Balam Horton, which may be inaccurate or may be a nickname for Benjamin.
Birth:
Documentation on 1866 birth year not given, from a OneWorldTree family tree record.
Same for IGI record showing birth as 1857, Kanawha, VA and married to Octaby Smith. HOWEVER, the official record of his marriage to Octavia (as Octaby), gives him as 24 years old in October 1882. This would mean he was born most likely in 1858...or possibly in 1857. It gives him as married in Putnam County, VA and then living in Kanawha County, WV.
William married Octavia Egnor on 12 Oct 1882 in Kanawha Co, WV. Octavia (daughter of John Washington Egnor, Sr. and Lucinda Frances Plumley) was born in 1860 in VA; died after 1930 in WV. [Group Sheet]

Doug Couch notes May 2009:
From various records found, the apparent order of marriages is 1)Smith, 2)Horton, 3)Plumley, 4)Saddler. Relatives of the time say there was an additional husband, Sutliff...order not known. She is said to be Indian...said to be full-blood Cherokee. For many years we did not know her given or surname. In late 2008, information surfaced showing her as Octavia Egnor, confirmed by several census records, etc.

Birth:
No record has been found for Octavia's birth as an Egnor or death with any last name ascribed to her spouses. Family lore has it that she was an Indian of Cherokee descent, but no further information was given. As she doesn't show in the 1860 census and then shows in the 1870 census as 14 years old, it is possible she was informally adopted into the family. Without U.S., VA/WV or Cherokee records showing this, it is not possible to determine. If she was Cherokee, none of the ancestors shown here were actually hers...unless some of them were actually Cherokee. Interestingly, her grandchildren through her daughter, Mary Frances Horton Atkins, never provided either a first or last name or a specific tribe for Octavia when asked, even though decades later it came to light that Mary's oldest daughter at least, did know her name and tribe. This would be congruent with her children instructing her grandchildren throughout their lives to not reveal this information to avoid persecution and possible relocation as an Indian. Information previously unavailable: A granddaughter of Octavia whose mother grew up away from her siblings after her parents died in 1928 & 1931, said that DNA testing has been done by one of the granddaughter's siblings, and no Native American blood was indicated. Those grandchildren had also been told about being descended from Native Americans (as had the granddaughter's mother's siblings). If more information comes to light and is suitable for showing here, I will add it at that time.

24. | Richard Barth was born in Feb 1855 in Germany. Notes:
Immigrated from Germany in 1880. Both parents born in Germany. A sister, Lillie Maystrick, is listed in the 1900 US census as living in this household. Note that son, Otto Richard Barth (Brown)'s wife, Clementine Pokorny of IL, also has Maystrick/Maestrick ancestors. Lillie could be a sister-in-law.
From great granddaughter of Richard:
=====
I will call my grandfather's father Barth and step/adopted-father Brown to help prevent confusion. Also, I will call his mother Mary, since that was her name. I was told that Mary divorced Barth when my grandfather was around 5 years old. He remembered his father and loved him very much. However, Barth was not such a good husband. He beat Mary (which is why she left). She soon met Brown, married him and they moved to Mexico (where my grandfather was raised). Brown was a medical doctor and he adopted my grandfather and his brother, who was older (I didn't know of any other siblings). My grandfather was the youngest and learned to love his new father. His brother never accepted Brown, though. My Uncle Allen actually contacted this brother (his uncle) who lived in LA, but I don't know any other details.
In the meantime, Barth was very upset about losing his family. He was an excellent marksman and loved to hunt. My Uncle Allen had a picture of him with his dogs and he looked pretty majestic with his rifle. He decided to go after Brown and get his family back. He went to Mexico and shot at Brown, missing him. The police were called and Barth was arrested. This was the last anyone ever saw of him. No one knows why he missed since he was such a good shot. Many thoughts have been expressed, but no one will ever know.
This had to have happened before WWII because my grandfather was only a little boy at the time. As an adult who understood Mexican culture and could talk their language fluently, my grandfather never could find out what happened to his father. He went to Mexico several times searching for his father with no luck. I think he may have found the jail he was taken to, but lost the trail there. My grandfather was also a decorated officer with many Mexican contacts on at least one occasion. Since he lived in Mexico, my grandfather learned how to speak and read/write Spanish fluently. He also knew how to read, write and speak English, German, Latin, and 5 other languages fluently.

36. | Matthew J. King was born on 05 Aug 1826 in Orange Co, NC (son of William KING and Catharine McCauley); died on 21 Nov 1890 in Drew Co, AR; was buried in Gaster Hill Cemetery, Monticello, Drew Co, AR. Notes:
Biographical Historical Memoirs - Southern Arkansas
pages 957-958
"Matthew J. King, farmer and merchant, Barkada, Ark. Mr. King, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Drew County, settled here in 1842, and there are but two citizens of his age, and but six citizens now living, who were living in this county at that time. Mr. King was born on August 5, 1820, and is the son of William and Cathering (McCauley) King, the father a native of North Carolina. The latter moved to Henderson County, Ky., with his family in 1831, cuultivated the soil, and there died in 1835. The mother then removed with her children, six in number, to Haywood County, Tenn., and there resided with her brother, James McCauley. Later she moved with him to Fayette County, and there died a few years afterward. Her children were named as follows Matthew J. (whose birth occurred in Orange County, N. C.), Nancy (widow of William Rowlit), William (deceased), Ellen, Catherine (deceased), and one child who died in infancy. The maternal grandfather of these children was a soldier in the Revolution, and was over eighty years of age at the time of his death. Matthew J. King worked on a farm to help his mother and there continued until her death, when he was bound out to L. C. Butts to learn the brick mason's trade. He remained with him for three years and then, in 1842, came to Arkansas, located in what is now Drew County (but then a part of Bradley County), and there followed agricultural pursuits for eight years. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Newton, a native of Alabama, and the daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Newton. Mrs. King died in 1880 leaving twelve children, sixe now living: Henry Neeley (married and resides in this county), Jesse Columbus (deceased), Albert (deceased), Mary E. (deceased), Laura A. (deceased), Ophelia (deceased), and William, Joseph J., James F., Sanford N. and Ida (all at home). After his marriage, Mr. King entered a quarter section of Government land, and has since been engaged in tilling the soil. He bought his present homestead, consisting of over 1,200 acres of land, with about 130 acres under cultifation, in 1868, and is also administrator of the estate of Jesse Newton (deceased). He owns a cotton gin (horse power) with a capacity of about three bales per day, and although his principal crop is cotton, he is interested in other occupations, and he and Mr. Oslin are in partnership in trading in mules, cattle, hogs and sheep. Mr. King also owns a half interest in the store at Barkada, owned by King & Oslin. Although in debt $75, he has made all his property by hard work and good business ability, and at the present time his taxable property amounts to over $13,000. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in his political views is Democratic. He has been a member of the Masonic order, but has not affiliated with any lodge for several years. In 1864 and 1865 he was in Capt. Owens' company, was employed as teamster, and was never in any engagements."

60. | Michael Biskup was born in 1819 in Germany; died in 1899; was buried in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery Old, St Louis, St Louis City, MO. Notes:
Michael Biskup, age 60, arrived in New York City, United States in 1880 from Posen, Germany on the ship Gellert. He was accompanied by Josefine Biskup, age 55, and Ignatz Biskup, age 21. A notation on the immigration record indicates that Michael & Josefine already lived in St. Louis, Missouri prior to this journey.
Also in 1880, Michael Biskup, age 61 & Justine Biskup, age 56, appear in the census in St. Louis, living in the family of their daughter, Maggie, who was married to Joseph Biskup. In the census, they are given as the inlaws of Joseph.
From 1882-1885 (St. Louis (Missouri) city directory, 1880-1900 ed.), Michael Biskup is shown as a tailor in St. Louis, along with Joseph & Ignatz Biskup (both tailors) & Roman Biskup (tailor/cutter). A Michael Biskup appears as a tailor in 1897 and 1899. (Note: In 1899, there are two Michaels as tailors; these are probably grandsons. These various Biskups were often found living at the same address or next door.)
In 1922, the death certificate of Ignatz J. Biskup (a tailor) gives Michael Biskup of Germany as his father (mother not given in this document). [The age given in the Find A Grave memorial for Michael Biskup matches that of the Michael Biskup who accompanied Josephine & Ignatz Biskup on the ship Gellert in 1880.]
Confusing information on the mother of Ignatz Biskup is given in the 1910 census in St. Louis, giving her as Auguste Biskup of Germany, age 74, and living in the family of Ignatz & Caroline (Ruhl) Biskup and their children. As there is a 12-year difference in age between Josefine/Justine Biskup and Auguste Biskup, it is clear these are not the same person. This would seem to indicate that Michael Biskup's children had more than one mother.
Michael married Auguste in Germany. Auguste was born est 1836 in Germany. [Group Sheet]

61. | Auguste was born est 1836 in Germany. Notes:

Important Parent Information re Ignatz Biskup:
• 1880 immigration records show Michael, Josephine & Ignatz arrived in New York from Germany, with Josefine age 55 (born Est. 1825)...Michael age 60 (born Est. 1820), and Ignatz age 21 (born Est. 1859)...with a destination of St. Louis, United States.
• 1910 census in St. Louis shows the only Ignatz Biskup in St. Louis as born April 1859 living with his wife Caroline and 6 children (including Ida who later married George Schwartz), and his mother named Auguste Biskup from Germany, age 74 (born Est. 1836)...showing clearly that Josefine Biskup who Ignatz immigrated with was not his mother. It is also possible that Michael Biskup, also immigrating with Ignatz, was not his father. It may be that Ignatz was traveling with an uncle and aunt, or with his father Michael and a sister of his father named Josefine.
Children:
- 30. Ignatz J. Biskup was born on 12 Apr 1859 in Posen, Germany; died on 5 Mar 1922 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co, MO; was buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis Co, MO.

109. | Anna Dobrava was born in Jul 1823 in Pisek, Bohemia; died in 1903; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH. Notes:
1900 Census Image - Vorsila Maestrick given as mother to head of household, Frank Sprosty (wife Mary). As the surname is always given first, it would appear her name was Maestrick Vorsila; however, her daughter is Marie Maystrik. Because of this, I am listing her here as Vorsila Maestrick; with consideration for "Maestrick" being her married name.
1900 Census Summary Data - Ma*Strick Vorsila given as living with Frank Sprosty. He is listed as head of household and as son of Ma*Strick Vorsila. Mary Sprosty is listed as Frank's wife. Ohio death records show Marie A. Pokorny as daughter of Frank Sprosty and Marie Maystrik...and this Marie Pokorny is the same person with maiden name Marie Sprosty. While the summary data is unclear on the proper name for Ma*Strick Vorsila, it is apparent that she is Frank's mother-in-law (rather than "mother"). The image itself shows what appears to be the correct (married) name.
Name:
Anna Dobrava Sprosty immigrated to the United States in 1866 (per the 1900 census).
Anna's maiden name, Dobrava, is from her son, John F. Sprosty's death certificate. The 1900 census shows Anna's son, Frank and wife Mary...and Vorsila Maestrick listed as "mother". Apparently, this is simply a census error, and Vorsila is actually his mother-in-law. Anna Dobrava Sprosty herself appears in the 1900 census with her daughter Mary's family.

- 54. Frank Sprosty, Jr. was born in Nov 1845 in Milevska, Pisek, Bohemia; and died.

153. | Isabelle Johns died in 1793. Notes:
ASSUMED CORRELATION OF RELATIONSHIPS (by Douglas Couch in 1997):
Will of Isabelle Johns gives children with Cowan surname and granddaughters Isabel & Eleanor Lamb. Isabel (given as Isabella) and Eleanor are daughters of Isaac Cowan Lamb & Mary Hendry. Thus, the relationships shown are assumed that Johns s her maiden name and her Cowan children derived from a previous marriage. It was given that Thomas Lamb and a Miss Cowan were the parents of Isaac Cowan Lamb. Since his children are given in Isabelle Johns will of 1793 as her grandchildren, it seems there is no other way the relationship could have existed.
Children:
- 76. Isaac Cowan Lamb was born in 1786 in New Hanover Co, NC; died on 19 Dec 1865 in New Hanover Co, NC; was buried in Lamb Cemetery, Burgaw, Pender Co, NC.

Born Scotland, lived Bladen Co., NC, New Hanover Co., NC...which became Columbia Township, Pender County, on his plantation on White Oak Creek (W.O. Plantation) where buried.
Loyalist along with James Hendry in American Revolution. At Charleston, SC on December 1, 1781, in Capt. Robert Hendry's Co. (Robert Demond's "THE LOYALISTS OF NORTH CAROLINA DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION").

World Family Tree, Ancestors of Andrew Ferguson Johnson and others received from the Phipps family (over 20 years ago) shows William Cromartie & Ruhamah Doane as the parents of (Annie Cromartie and) Thankful Cromartie.
However, the records of Donna Johnson (bounty@charlotte.infi.net), which is a more complete and extensive record (sent in response to my response to a post on World Family Tree), gives the William Cromarite that is married to Ruhamah Doane as the son of William Cromartie of Scotland and as the sibling of Ann E. Cromartie and of Thankful Cromartie that is married to Alexander Hendry. Because this latter record is more complete with dates and many siblings, and because the dates pertaining to all the children of William Cromartie of Scotland are chronologically sequenced as one would expect, pending documentation otherwise, the records giving William as the sibling of Thankful and not her ancestor will be accepted as accurate.
These two Johnson records are clearly referring to the same people, despite the variances.

Parker married Mary Lefon on 1 Mar 1792 in Montgomery Co, VA. Mary was born in 1765 in Franklin Co, VA; died before 1850 in Raleigh Co, WV. [Group Sheet]

165. | Mary Lefon was born in 1765 in Franklin Co, VA; died before 1850 in Raleigh Co, WV. Notes:
REFN: 22151
Name:
It may be that Mary had a middle name Virginia. Of three Elizabeths born to Parker, Elizabeth born first of the three was the daughter of Mary Lefon. However, that Elizabeth's death record gives her parents as Parker & Virginia Adkins. There are other Parker Adkins, clearly not her father and also not having a spouse named Virginia.

Their Aegender notes: Aug 1999
Circumstantial evidence points to John Agner, Jr. and his wife Barbara being the parents of our Archibald Egnor!
Original findings concerning John Jr. are being re-examined. We now believe that the Johns in Rockbridge were confused and that John Jr. did go to Monroe County about 1823. Based on this and other circumstantial evidence, we are assuming that John Jr. is the father of Archibald and Elizabeth Egnor.
==========
Doug Couch notes 2008: Also given as "? Egnor" in One Family Tree family records. Gould family records show father of Archibald as Egnor with wife Mary. Apparently, there are serious errors with this lineage. Where shown as John Agner, wife Barbara, daughter Mary is born when he is 11, and dies when he is 98, an unlikely but not impossible relationship. The above comment from the Aegender family records-notes, about the "Johns in Rockbridge" being confused, is unclear. To keep children groups, and people given as spouses organized, Barbara is shown with her children, and Mary (Polly?) is shown with hers. The claim that John Agner (Jr.) and Barbara are the parents of Archibald does not agree with the family linkage given in the same database where the comment was entered. Therefore, it is here "assumed" that there were two spouses, and that Mary and/or Polly is the mother of Archibald...until better documentation can be found.

186. | Jeptha MASSIE, Jr. was born in 1779 in Greenbrier Co, VA (son of Jeptha MASSIE and Mary SOWARDS); died in 1853 in WV. Notes:
Doug Couch 2008 note: Ancestors and any collateral lines beyond Jeptha Massie 1779-1853 are from online family data of Paul E. McFerrin:
http://home.att.net/~paulmcferrin/geneology/fam00590.html
Neither a Lahoma nor Lany are listed as children of Jeptha Massie and Anna Meadows in the McFerrin data. Thus the McFerrin data is unclear whether correctly connected to Lany.
Ancestors given by McFerrin data:
1-Jeptha 1779
2-Jeptha Massie 1750 VA - 1855
2-Mary Sowards b.VA
3-John Massey 1720 MD - 1781 MD
3-Sarah Strong
4-James (Massey)
4-Rachel Jayne
5-Nicholas Massey, Jr. abt 1662 - 1724
5-Mary? abt 1666 - abt 1725
6-Nicholas Massey abt 1630 - abt 1693, md. MD
6-Anne b.MD
This general lineage is reiterated in the billmassey data at
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze7wwc2/index.html
Extremely lengthy researched lineage of the Massey family (not currently connected to this line) is found at:

This line goes back to the 10th century.
Died:
McFerrin data lists death 1853 in Lawrence Co, OH.
Jeptha married Anna MEADOWS on 21 Feb 1806 in Monroe Co, VA. Anna was born in 1788 in VA; died in 1860 in VA. [Group Sheet]
|
187. | Anna MEADOWS was born in 1788 in VA; died in 1860 in VA. Notes:
Doug notes 2008:
Anna Meadows given in Mullins records as born 27 Feb 1806, unlikely spouse relationship and impossible son relationship. 1850 census shows Jeptha Massie, wife Anna and son William, with Anna's estimated birth year as 1788, a much more likely date, used here.
Anna's children are given differntly in different records. Thomas, Lahoma/Lany, William, and Jeptha are common to the various records (except one doesn't show Lahoma/Lany). Her other children's birth years, extend her child-bearing years beyond what one would expect, and children cited as by Jeptha Jr's second wife overlap those years. They are included here for reference, but many may not be her children. Similarly, other records looked at do not list a second wife. For my ancestors, I will make an effort to obtain documentation of their relationships.
Died:
McFerrin data lists death place as Lawrence Co, OH.

Married:
This date is for the Marriage Bond, presumably before the marriage, but could have been on that date as well.
