Important Note: Egg Harbor & Egg Harbor Township have had many names and border configurations. For most places cited, I used "Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic Co, NJ", although often enough that same place was in Gloucester Co at the time, or used the name Weymouth or Galloway Township, etc. These named areas both changed and overlapped.

| 1885-NJ State Census, Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic Co, NJ David L. Scull & Sylvia Ann Champion with children
Note: Although the names indicate this is the correct census for David's & Sylvia's family, the children's ages are way off. If it were just a couple of them, it would seem likely that those were actually grandchildren of the same names. However, since it appears to be all or almost all of them, it seems the enumerator was using the wrong age indicator columns. As recently as the 1880 federal census, only two of their children were at home. I do not know why the state census of 1885 (this census) shows all their children together, since it is clear some of them would not have been separate households. Additionally, there are some new names of children very young; which does sound like grandchildren, but there is no indication of relationships to guide. Some such censuses gather all people of the same surname and lists them together. However, these two census pages show two groupings of the Scull family and two groupings of the English family; which would seem to indicate separate families. |
