- William C. Millard Atkins went by Millard. He is said by his grandchildren to have had a nickname, "Bub", apparently after his grandfather, Robert Adkins. I've never heard why he has an additional middle initial "C". —Family Name: Of his father's known children, both he and his brother, Andrew, spelled the family name as Atkins, and his sister, Martha, spelled it as Adkins. His father, Jesse, spelled it Adkins as all earlier generations spelled it. The earliest document I found was a census; which shows Jesse and his children with a surname of Adkins. The only census I found for Millard and his family spelled it as Atkins, including naming his parents as Atkins, which was inaccurate.

- Wm. C. Millard's son's birth certificate lists him (Millard Sr.) as born in Elk River, WV; which is in Kanawha County and eastward, no part of which is in Cabell County. However, basically all of WV was originally Kanawha County. But if he was born in 1857, WV did not exist as a state until 1863.
- Although Millard's death certificate gives his birth year as 1857, his son, Oliver Balaam's family Bible gives it as 1859. The notations in this Bible appear to have been entered after Oliver's death, presumably being copied from earlier family records.

- Apparently, the family of William C. Millard Atkins moved from Tacketts Creek near St. Albans to Scott Depot in Teays Valley between Feb 5th and Feb 13th in 1920, resulting in them being counted twice in the census of that year. Less than a year after this move, Millard, Sr. was buried in Scary, WV, about half way between these two residences.
