  • Name  John Degan  [1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    • This John Degan, his wife, Sarah, and their son, Alex, were formerly linked to Sarah A. (wife of Francis Compton)...as another spouse of Sarah A. This was an assumption. Thus this linking has been removed, and this family is intentionally left orphaned from the main tree...and is kept only for reference in case a connection that makes sense is found. It was a futile attempt to account for where Ora Ella Scaggs was during the 1880 census, when her siblings are with their grandmother, Sarah A. (Compton). Ella was about 14 at that time, and her whereabouts for that period are unknown.

  • Notes
    • 1880 Census Summaries for John Degan & Sarah Compton living separately related to Scaggs/Skaggs
    • In 1870 census, John is listed with May, and with children of Sarah (Alex & John); however, he is also listed with what appear to be three step children (Adrian?, Elizabeth & James Angeline) with possible ex of May and older (step) children living next door. 1880 census listed as including John (on HeritageQuest) is an entirely illegible copy. 1900 census shows Anna Degan at 70 years, John (Jr?) & Sarah E, and James & Ida Degan...unclear if same descendants.
    • John Degan listed here as the (first) spouse of Sarah unknown, given as his wife in the 1850 census, but who is also listed in the 1850 census as the spouse of Francis Compton. If these are indeed the same Sarah, and they appear to be, then Sarah was counted twice in the census, perhaps changing households between the census being taken in the Degan and Compton households. Confirming this as a possibility, in the 1860 census, John is shown with his sons Alex and John, without Sarah, living with Frances Lovellett and her children (perhaps a sister of John), and in the 1880 census with wife Anna unknown, son Alex, and other Degan children. (In the 1850 census, John and Sarah are living with Alex, and a John K. Spaulding age 13 (unknown relationship, but is not son John born later).) Also, in the 1880 census, Ellen Scags is shown as a grand-daughter in John's household. If Sarah married Francis Compton, their daughter, Elizabeth Compton married James M. Skaggs in 1861, and their daughter, Ella is shown in the 1870 census at 5 years old, born in 1865. While this would not legally make her a grand-daughter, it could well be that Ella/Ellen are the same person and that she is regarded as his grand-daughter because she is the daughter of his ex-spouse, Sarah. I have no record of any divorce or remarriages, and yet this scenario fits all census records for all people. Additionally, although the 1870 census shows Sarah living with Francis and her Compton children, the 1880 census shows Ella Scags's siblings (not including Ella) living with Sarah (without Francis), along with her Compton children. Ella Scagg is also listed in the 1880 census as a servant, but no household is given. Perhaps she was not in a household per se, but in an institution temporarily, resulting in her appearance in two records upon transfer to a household not yet censused...if this is the same Ella.
