Eben Couch Litherland was my great-grandfather. He was born 11 April 1835 per death notice published in unknown IL newspaper ("Age 64 yrs, 11 mos, 13 days") in Friendsville IL (per Muster and Descriptive Roll of Co H, 15th Illinois Cavalry). Middle name "Couch" from St. Louis, MO, death certificate of daughter Cathryn Elner Litherland Quehl. He died in St. Louis, MO, 24 March 1900 (per Probate File 25795, St Louis MO; Civil War Pension File). He is buried at Friedens Cem., St. Louis, MO, with his wife Susan Melissa Blood Litherland, and three daughters, Cathryn E. Litherland Quehl (w/spouse William); Harriet Asenath Litherland Green; and Frances E. Litherland Stead (w/spouse Thomas).

Ebenezer married Susan Melissa BLOOD in 1865. Susan (daughter of Horace Blood and Asenith Chamberlain) was born about 1847 in IL. [Group Sheet]

Certificate he has listed Carpenter
as his trade.John was removed and buried in Riverview Cemetry. Plot 5-15
He joined the Union Army on October 17, 1861. He enlisted as a Private
for the
66th Reg-Illinois Vol. He rose to 2nd Lt. when he left. He was discharged
at Ridgeway, Ky
on July 07, 1865.

Mathew died at home 111 Idaho St.In the Fulton neighborhood of Portland
of Heart Faliure. He was buried by Finley & Son and placed in Greenwood.

Helen Litherland was my great grandmother. She was born 12 Dec 1879, in Illinois, probably Grayville, but her death certificate shows Litchfield, which is a possibility. She married William Jefferson Roberts of Wabash Co., IL, sometime prior to May 1899, when my grandmother, Beatrice Alma Roberts, was born. Sometime after the birth of twins William Jefferson Roberts, Jr., and Sutter E. Roberts, born May 1902, Helen divorced and never remarried. She relocated in the 1920s with her daughter and her husband, Maurice M. Bloom, to Meadville, PA, then to Saegertown, Crawford Co., PA, where Helen died 21 Aug 1960. She is buried in Roselawn Cem, Saegertown, PA. (From her death certicate and records of Hunter Funeral Home, Saegertown, PA)

Harriet Asenath Litherland was born 10 Sept 1878, in Grayville, White Co., IL, married a John Green, unknown, sometime after March 1900. Known as Hattie, she died 30 Nov 1949, in St. Louis, MO, buried 2 Dec. 1949 in Friedens Cem., St. Louis. MO.

Cathryn Elner Litherland was born 2 Feb 1882 in Grayville, White Co., IL. She married William Quehl of St. Louis. She died 1 Oct 1958, in Lemay, St. Louis Co., MO, last residence in Cuba, MO, and is buried in Friedens Cem, St. Louis, MO, with her husband, parents, and sisters. (Per death certificate.)

Pearl Litherland was born 27 Nov 1888, in St. Louis, MO (per Civil War Pension File of her father, Eben Litherland); she married Ralph Yourtee (b 1873 in Ohio, son of Samuel Lambert Yourtee and Anna Catherine Hart).

Norman and his brother Clyde were stricken with Scarlett Fever about
1871. There sister Mary was
to have been a infant and did not get it. They were both left deaf from
this illness.
After moving to Portland, Oregon Norman moved to Canada.

Stories told to Tammy Beckemeyer from Audrey Purdin,Southard and Dorothy
Southard, Edgar.
Clyde along with his brother Norman got Scarlett Fever about 1871. His
sister Mary was said to have been a infant at the time and did not get
it. It left him deaf.
Clyde later married a woman described as being very cruel. She was from
the South and as the story
goes was used to having everything done for her. No one is certain if
they had children.
Clyde killed himself in the 30`s or 40`s by slitting his own throat.
Dorothy said her mother told her about
it years later as Mamie would not discuss it.

Mamie was tall for a woman of her day about 5ft 9. She was taller than
her husband.
She also was a very private person. A lot of stories had to be told after
her death.
She walked a great deal about 8 to 10 miles a day till she was very old.
People were amazed at how
far she would go for her age. (see note under spouse)

Beryl Audrey Southard known as Audrey to her friends spent her early
childhood was spent in
Walla Walla. They then moved back to Portland where she attend Arleta
Grammer school,and
2yrs at Franklin high school. In her childhood her two great loves were
ballet dancing and
giving recitation.
Her Father was a grocery store manager most of his life. She used to help
out in his store.
That is were she met her husband Ernie. They eloped to
Vancouver,Washington one week from
her 17 birthday, on August 20, 1919. They went to seaside, Oregon for
there honeymoon
because Ernie had never seen the ocean. His first reaction was "all you
can see is water".
Audrey replied"What did you expect to see China".
At 19 she gave birth to her only child Dorothy Bernice Southard. They
moved to a small community
where they owned a gas station. She used to carry Dorothy on her hip as
she pumped gas.
Audrey never learned to drive a car. She tried , she took her daughter
and all the neighbor children
for a ride. They went out 72nd down the hill to Bell Station(a huge hill)
of course she knew that
when you went downhill you took it out of gear. Wich she did, she didn`t
worry because she
thought she was doing it right. God was with her , they arrived home
safely. When Ernie found out
what she had done ,needless to say he was upset and Audrey never drove
agian.
Audrey had several jobs she worked at Willamette Iron & Steele ship yards
during WWII. Then went
to work at Porters-Pasta Factory. She then worked at Lipmans Dept. store
in the lamp section until she retired in 1962.
She was very out going and enjoyed a good laugh. Always had fun whatever
she did. Had lots of friends
and loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She loved going places,
hated to stay home. Was always there to help when needed. She lived out
her days at
12524 S.E. Foster rd. until her husband died in 1979. She then moved to
Kirkland Manor and
enjoyed the company of others. She lived there until she was stricken
with Alzheimer, were
she lived with her daughter for 3 yrs. It got to hard after a while for
her daughter to care for her
and she was placed in a Foster home down the street from her
great-granddaughter Tammy.
She was visited daily and well cared for. Were she died April 1988.
