Among the many lands owned or protected by the Fletchers, MacNabs and related clans, Ardbrecknish (Ardvrecknish), Argyllshire, Scotland (today in the United Kingdom), lies along the south shore of Loch Awe, the longest freshwater loch in Scotland, some distance to the northeast of Glasgow. As one leaves Loch Awe to the north, following along the River Orchy, the Bridge of Orchy is found lying just south of the much smaller Loch Tulla. Nestled just a little north of Loch Tulla is Achallader. And almost due east of Ardbrecknish is Loch Earn, with Ardvorlich on its south shore and Dundurn to the east. Southward lies Callander near Loch Venachar, to the east of which one finds Drumvaich, Doune and Dunblane.

     In 1831 a book was published entitled "The Scottish Gael", by James Logan, in which he quotes an account of a Highland funeral which took place some years before. This recalls the burial of "a respectable old man - Peter Fletcher, who had died at the age of a hundred and two, and relates the custom of providing refreshments for the mourners. The burial took place at Achallader "... a lonely spot, about seven miles distant from the village, on the confines of Glenurchy Forest, and singular, as being almost exclusively appropriated to persons of the name of Fletcher." At the conclusion of the feast, which consisted of breed, cheese, and "a good allowance of something stronger than water to wash them down", some wild deer emerged from the forest. Whilst the company were bidding each other farewell, the deer ate up the remains of the bread and cheese, an occurrence which boded evil in the eyes of the superstitious Highlanders. Each one present looked around, hoping to be spared from any impending disaster. One of their number, however, was doomed. John Fletcher, the ninety-nine year old brother of the man whose funeral he had just attended, was drowned in the River Urchy whilst on his way home.

Some confusion exists regarding the reinterment of Alexander's and Rachel's; which were moved from the Old Kirk churchyard in 1883 to Bowmanville Cemetery. Said to have been moved to his son Gordon Drummond Fletcher's plot, they are not there. However, there are two unmarked non-empty graves next to the grave of Alexander's great uncle, Drummond Gordon Fletcher. Neither those graves nor Alexander's or Rachel's graves are in the cemetery interment records. Please view the provided PDF file for more information (same as media under Headstones below).
