Foothills Cafe

Early Post Card photo of the Foothills Cafe on US Route 80. Sometime after this photo was taken, a one-room motel was built behind and to the right. In about 1961, Wilson, Margaret & Doug Couch lived in a 8'x40' mobilehome setup alongside the motel room (behind the right carport). Not long after, Interstate 8 was completed, putting this cafe and a few other businesses out of business. Later still, a flash flood a few miles to the west, near Ocotillo, California knocked out an I-8 freeway bridge. Roy Batley showed me (Doug) a photo of his pickup truck buried in the mud up to the top of the cabin, and stated that he and his two children were in that truck on the bridge when it went down, but survived. Quite a tale.
