In the yellowed photo image received, there was a 3-line caption: "Alva Loupee, Patience Shawalk, Orin Whitcomb's daughter". Alva Loupee is a grandson of Patience Couch Ruark Showalter (son of daughter Henrietta Ruark Loupee). Apparently there were originally three people in the photo, and Alva does not show in this version. No record of a Patience "Shawalk" could be found, as well as no daughter of Orin, Sr. or Orin, Jr. named Patience. Therefore it is assumed by me that Patience Shawalk is Patience Showalter, and the daughter shown is not named.

The south fork of the Staunton River was named after John Pigg sometime after his purchasing land along its north side. The original Pigg River Covered Bridge was built in 1768 by Jacob Stover, Sr. In the early 19th century, the bridge became traditionally called the Lou's Island bridge, owing to Lou, a relative of the Noward family, having been drowned while fording the river on horseback, and being found washed up on a small island near the bridge.
